Dead or Alive: the composer/performer relationship.

As I do a lot of early music I’m often negotiating with dead musicians – composers, performers, improvisers. This has been crucial to the relationships I’ve had with living ones, for whom the near death experience can often turn out to be not so bad after all.

John Potter is a singer and author, fomerly a member of Electric Phoenix, The Hilliard Ensemble and Red Byrd, he now performs with his ensemble Amores Pasados.

He records for ECM and his books on singing are published by Cambridge and Yale University Press. He is Reader Emeritus in Music at the University of York and currently pursues freelance projects.
