New Piano Concerto Is Top Guardian Pick

The premiere of a new piano concerto by Music Department Senior Lecturer Martin Suckling tops the Guardian’s ‘Five of the Best Classical Concerts’.  The piece, written for acclaimed pianist Tom Poster, and inspired by a poem by Niall Campbell, is part of Dr Suckling’s continuing collaboration with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as their Associate Composer, a role which combines commissions, performances, talks, community outreach and creative education projects.

  • Thomas Simaku Performance at Hull 2017 – City of Culture

    Thomas Simaku’s ‘Solar’ for Trumpet, Violin & Piano was performed at Middleton Hall of the University of Hull on 3rd February, in their opening concert of spring 2017 series , which included works by Arvo Pärt and Sibelius.

  • Piano Concerto shortlisted for SAfNM honour

    Music Department Senior Lecturer Martin Suckling’s Piano Concerto has been shortlisted in the Large Scale Work category of the inaugural Scottish Awards for New Music.  Over 180 nominations were submitted by artists, audience members and the general public, reinforcing the depth and breadth of new music activity in Scotland.  The awards event will be held at the Drygate Brewery, Glasgow on Wednesday 8 March 2017.

    James Williamson is this month’s featured composer for the New Oboe Music Project.

  • New Zamora Perez cantata premiered

    On Decembre 21st the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Pudahuel and the San Sebastian University Choir (both from Santiago, Chile) premiered the cantata “Cantos por la Paz” (Songs for Peace) by Carlos Zamora Perez,  at Nuestra Señora de la Victoria Church in Santiago.  The work was commissioned by the Choir of San Sebastian University to be performed in the annual Christmas Concert.
