Nicola LeFanu awarded 2014 RPS Bursary

Professor Emeritus Nicola LeFanu has been award the RPS Elgar Bursary, created to support the work of mature composers. She will write a new work for the BBC Symphony Orchestra to be premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The bursary, which is funded by the royalties from Anthony Payne’s completion of Elgar’s Third Symphony, provides financial support to allow for the creation of a new work which “may push back musical boundaries, but not at the expense of accessibility and integrity: in short, a work of which Edward Elgar himself might have approved.”

Nicola LeFanu is the fifth recipient of the bursary since its inception in 2002, following in the footsteps of Lyell Cresswell, Dominic Muldowney, Edwin Roxburgh and Jonathan Lloyd. She will write a new orchestral work to be premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in its 2016/17 season; her last work for symphony orchestra was written in 1987.

    Following the success at the 2019 International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM)  – World Music Days , Thomas Simaku’s most recent work, La Leggiadra Luna for mixed choir a cappella, has been broadcast by four European radio stations.

    His new work will be performed by four different ensembles in four European cities and released on CD in 2020

    The objective of Discovering Young Composers of Europe (DYCE) Competition was to bring together the four regions of Europe (North, South, East, West) by inviting the composition students and alumni of all European Academies, Conservatories and Universities to submit a work.
