Carlo Estolano is a guitarist and composer born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and
engaged in a PhD in Jazz Performance/Composition after successfully
concluding an MA in the same subject also at The University of York.
His research is about creating original music based on the combination of
elements from Brazilian Jazz and European chamber jazz.
He was a member of Orquestra Brasileira de Guitarras between 1992 and 2001, with which he released 2 albums and toured Brazil’s major capitals.
In 1997, he founded Tastho Guitar Trio, releasing ‘Sambaqui’ in 2001, with the
collaboration of Guinga, Toninho Horta and major figures of Brazilian Jazz.
In 2008, he recorded his first solo album ‘Caldo’ for Ethos Brasil Records, also
featuring important names and with cover notes from Hermeto Pascoal and
In the UK, Carlo has worked with the University of York Jazz Orchestra, The
Assembled, International Ensemble, and Guitorchestra. He has presented his pieces in
Postgraduate Forums and the York Festival of Ideas.
Carlo plays regularly with his quintet in venues in York and at Clube do Choro
in London, where he also collaborated with Italian singer Marta Capponi.
