PhD Composition

Desmond Clarke has worked with numerous professional and amateur ensembles, including Ensemble Intercontemporain; the Diotima, Ligeti, Kreutzer and Eurydice string quartets; contemporary harpsichordist Jane Chapman; instrumental groups Vaganza, Chasmus, Cat*er*waul and the Dr K Sextet; as well as numerous improvisatory collectives.He directed York University’s Chimera Ensemble in the 2013/14 season, overseeing the UK premieres of Beat Furrer’s Aira and Morton Subotnick’s Ascent into Air.

His 2015 projects include a viola concerto for Tim Ridout and the Melos Sinfonia; a choral work for the Coro di Musicologica di Cremona for performance at the Milan EXPO; and a collaboration with the Vertixe Sonora Ensemble in Santiago de Compostela.

He has attended festivals and residencies at IRCAM, Paris; the Banff Centre, Alberta; and the HighSCORE festival in Italy at which he was awarded the 2013 festival prize for his string quartet Insect-Wood-Growth.
