James Whittle

PhD Composition

Originally from Woking, James began composing whilst a teenager. He graduated from the University of York in 2011 with a BA Music First class honours with distinction. During his BA, he received the Wilfrid Mellers Prize, the Chimera Undergraduate Commission 2011 (for which he devised a site-specific work, [CAGED]), and the John Paynter Prize for an outstanding contribution to the life of the department. He received AHRC Professional Development funding for his Masters in Music by Research (Composition, 2011-12), on Composing and devising music theatre.

He is currently continuing his research into collaboratively devising music-theatre works in a PhD in Composition, supervised by Roger Marsh.

James was a winner of the 2015 Lyons Celebration Award.

James holds a Sir Jack Lyons Scholarship and also the UYMP Assistantship
