Ji Sun Yang
Ji Sun Yang (Seoul, South Korea) is a composer, pianist and accompanist. She studied composition at Sook-Myung Women’s University in Seoul (BA) and at the Hague Royal Conservatory (BA/MA). She has studied with Sue-Yeon Hong, Gilius van Bergeijk and Martijn Padding.
Her music has been featured at festivals such as Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, ISCM in Sydney, and in the Hague. She has been commissioned by ensembles such as Percussion Group the Hague, Spectra Ensemble, Ensemble Klang, Trio Agartha and the Doelen String Quartet. Also, her music was performed by Asko Ensemble, TIMF ensemble, Ensemble Besides, Trio La Mer, Zenas Kim, Leonard Kwon and the Chimera Ensemble.
Ji Sun attended the summer course ‘Ostrava Days 2007’ in the Czech Republic, and in 2008 she attended the ‘Apeldoorn Young Composers Meeting’ in the Netherlands with ‘Orkest Ereprijs’. She travelled to the U.S. for ‘Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival in 2008’ in Massachusetts. A work for percussion quartet has been awarded third prize in the composition competition: ‘percussive arts society in Italy. 2009’. Recently, NMC released a digital single of her piece for the Sound and Music higher education program with the London Sinfonietta. In 2015 the Ligeti Quartet will perform her music, and a New Dots and Dark Invention commission is due for performance at the LateMusic /York Spring Festival.
Ji Sun has been the recipient of the LeFanu Composition Award, the Holmes Composition Scholarship and the Overseas Student Scholarship.
