Omar Shahryar

PhD Composition

Omar is a British-Bangladeshi composer, director and educator specialising in the creation of Opera and Musical Theatre.

Omar worked regularly as a director and assistant director for the UK’s major opera companies before turning his attention to composition. His recent compositions include the musical Cleopatra’s Key for Hatstand Productions tour of UK and Spain, a multi-ensemble community work O to make the most jubilant song with players from the Britten Sinfonia and a chamber opera The Sweeper of Dreams which was performed at the Tete-a-tete Festival, London in 2014.

Omar regularly leads workshops to engage and inspire hard-to-reach communities as well as training workshops for teachers and arts professionals. His PhD is centred on the Composition of Opera for Young People.

Omar holds a full WRoCAH scholarship (AHRC)
